Tether has introduced Alloy, a new product blending traditional finance stability with digital asset innovation. Alloy is a digital asset known as aUSD₮, over-collateralized by Tether Gold (XAU₮), ensuring that for every unit of aUSD₮ created, a larger value of gold is held as collateral in Swiss vaults. This addresses the common issue of volatility in the cryptocurrency market, offering a stable alternative backed by gold. Alloy operates through over-collateralization, where users deposit Tether Gold into a smart contract, mint aUSD₮ based on the gold deposited, and use aUSD₮ for various transactions. This system provides the US dollar's utility with gold's stability, crucial for those wanting to use digital assets without worrying about sudden value drops. Alloy complements Bitcoin by providing a stable alternative for transactions, allowing diversification of digital asset portfolios, and encouraging mainstream adoption of digital currencies. Designed for secondary market liquidity, Alloy creates arbitrage opportunities when market prices deviate from the reference price. If aUSD₮ falls below $1, users can buy it at a discount to release their collateral, while if it exceeds $1, new users can mint and sell it to balance the supply and stabilize the price. However, from a Shariah perspective, aUSD₮ is not suitable for TijarX as it does not give the holder ownership of the gold per se, unlike alternatives like Ainslie or PAX Gold. Chief Shariyah Architect of MRHB, Mufti Billal Omarjee points out that XAU₮, the Tether Gold backing aUSD₮, is also not Shariah-compliant as there is no audit confirming a 1:1 gold reserve ratio. Thus, while Alloy by Tether offers innovative stability and utility, it does not meet the criteria for Shariah compliance, making it unsuitable for those seeking Shariah-compliant investment options.
